Photojournalist's
vehicle released
MISA-Zimbabwe
March 26, 2007
The police on 26 March 2007 released
the vehicle they seized two weeks ago from freelance photojournalist
Tsvangirai Mukwazhi following the intervention of his lawyers.
Mukwazhi told MISA-Zimbabwe that the
police were, however, still to release his laptop computer and digital
camera which they said they were still trying to locate. Mukwazhi
said he had to use spare keys to start the vehicle, a Mitsubishi
Pajero, after the police at Machipisa Police Station also failed
to locate the original keys.
The police impounded the vehicle and
equipment on 11 March 2007 when they arrested Mukwazhi together
with leaders of opposition parties and civic society organisations
in Highfield ahead of a planned national day of prayer organised
under the auspices of the Save
Zimbabwe Campaign that had been scheduled for Zimbabwe Grounds
in Highfield.
Background
Mukwazhi and Tendai Musiyazviriyo, a film producer who
both freelance for Associated Press, were arrested on the same day
with opposition MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai, MDC secretary-general
Tendai Biti, Authur Mutambara leader of the other MDC faction, legislator
Job Sikhala, Dr Lovemore Madhuku, the chairperson of the National
Constitutional Assembly and Grace Kwinje, William Bango and
Nelson Chamisa of the Tsvangirai faction.
They were admitted to hospital for
treatment after they were severely assaulted by the police while
in custody following their arrest and subsequent release without
charges.
