Editor's
trial postponed
MISA-Zimbabwe
September 25, 2007
The trial of
Bright Chbvuri the editor of the Zimbabwe
Congress of Trade Unions' The Worker magazine charged
under the repressive Access
to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA) was on
25 September 2007 postponed to the next day in Zimbabwe's
border town of Plumtree
The trial had initially
been set for 25-26 September 2007. MISA-Zimbabwe reliably understands
that the trial was postponed to 26 September 2007 because the trial
magistrate was reportedly not feeling well.
Chibvuri who was arrested
in Plumtree on 3 March 2007 spent two nights in police custody and
was only released on 5 March 2007 when he appeared before a Plumtree
magistrate on charges of contravening Section 83 of AIPPA which
penalises the practice of journalism without accreditation.
At the time of his arrest,
Chibvuri had already applied for accreditation but had not received
a response from the Media and Information Commission (MIC). He has
since been duly accredited.
