  • MDC Councillor abducted
    Movement for Democratic Change (MDC)
    May 20, 2008

On Monday 19 May 2008 around 1:20 pm Portipher Bakaimani a newly-elected councillor for Cherutombo, who contested on a Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) ticket in the Marondera Municipality, was abducted by known Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) operative who were seen driving a metallic-blue pick-up truck with no number plates.

Mr Bakaimani was together with three other councillors when five CIO operatives, one of who was identified as Phibi, approached them and showed service their pistols. Farai Nyandoro and Callow, also councilors from Cherutombo took off and the abducted failed to escape.

He was bundled into the vehicle and it sped off towards the Mutare direction.

He was abducted in the central business district of Marondera, in the green, near the Jet Dry Cleaners complex.

In the previous week, some disturbances were reported in the Yellow City and Cherima suburbs of Marondera. It is alleged that some Zanu (PF) youths were ferried into the suburbs from nearby Murehwa rural areas. They were escorted around by a known Zanu (PF) leader who was identifying for them some MDC supporters. They wanted the youths to assault the MDC supporters.

Incensed by this harassment, some MDC supporters and other residents were not amused and hence they went after the youths and retaliated. Some of them went further and stoned the houses of the Zanu (PF) officials who were escorting the youth militia.
