Incident of violence at Harvest House
Movement for Democratic Change
March 22, 2010

The leadership of the Movement for Democratic Change was informed last week of an incident of violence and intimidation that occurred at the party's headquarters.

The abhorrent incident was perpetrated by members of the MDC youth and represents a gross violation of the founding principles of the party and its dedication to non-violent, democratic struggle.

Irrespective of the claim by the youth that their actions were prompted by genuine grievances, the fact that they acted unilaterally, by-passing the party's internal procedures and undertaking acts that violate the spirit of the MDC has resulted in unreserved condemnation and definitive action by the leadership.

Following an emergency Standing Committee meeting on Monday 19th April 2010, it was resolved that the alleged perpetrators be immediately suspended from the party and barred from entering Harvest House pending the outcome of an investigation by an independent committee appointed by the leadership.

This committee has already begun its work to establish the full details of what occurred and will present its report to the Standing Committee for final action as soon as it is completed.

As a party of excellence, the MDC is the guardian of the people's peaceful struggle for a New Zimbabwe under a new democratic dispensation and violence or any other illegal acts cannot and will not be tolerated.
