MDC condemns police action
Movement for Democratic Change
October 27, 2010

The MDC strongly condemns attempts by the police to bar an MDC consultative meeting at Cyril Jennings Hall in Highfields, Harare last night. The absurd attempt by the police to bar the meeting was in clear disregard of the Global Political Agreement (GPA).

The GPA clearly states that there should be free political activity since it is the cornerstone of any multi - party democratic system. The people of this country should be free to propagate their views and canvass for support, free of harassment and intimidation. Since President Morgan Tsvangirai launched the popular public meetings in Harare at Mabvuku hall last week, the police have been battling to stop the public meetings from taking place.

By trying to stop the public consultations from taking place the police were in violation of their own Public Order and Security Act which requires that police be notified of any public gathering within five days of it taking place, which the MDC did. The MDC calls upon the police to be impartial and professional in the discharge of their duties. The MDC is a Party of Excellence that treasures and values the rights of the people and we take great exception when basic human rights are trampled upon.

Zimbabweans need to be respected and their rights need to be honoured. We do not condone the continued abuse of office by some elements in the security sector. The people of Zimbabwe need their freedoms of speech, movement and assembly. Who they chose to listen to should be to their discretion within their constitutional rights. The MDC remains committed to delivering real change to the people of Zimbabwe.
