MDC joins Zimbabwe in commemorating 11 March 2007
Movement for Democratic Change
April 08, 2011

The MDC joins the people of Zimbabwe in commemorating and honouring the events of 11 March 2007 when the struggle for real change marked a significant turning point with the brutal assault, arrests and detention of political and civil society leaders in Highfield, Harare.

The vicious attack on President Tsvangirai, senior political and civic leaders and other pro-democracy activists on their way to a Save Zimbabwe Campaign prayer meeting at Zimbabwe Grounds, unfortunate as it was, moved the world attention to Zimbabwe and triggered a serious negotiation process that ultimately provided an indelible seal on Zanu PF's fate on 29 March 2008.

The party realises that the struggle has since reached its penultimate stage. This is a crucial period for all the forces against tyranny and dictatorship to reaffirm their 2007 resolve for unity and unanimity right to the end.

We applaud the decision by the civil society to commemorate 11 March on Saturday and implore on the nation to stay on the course until final victory. As we recognise this historic day, we note for the record our gallant fighters, heroes and heroines who gave all for all and paid the ultimate price for real change.

We recognise the selfless spirit of Gift Tandare who was callously shot and killed in cold blood on this day. At the same time, we accord equal attention to hundreds of other activists abducted and murdered; those internally displaced with wounds and deep scars from Zanu PF violence; and those who sacrificed their humanity, for their birthright and national heritage before and in the run-up to 27 June 2008.

As a people's Party of Excellence, the MDC pledges to maintain an unwavering determination and leadership to see through the national project in their honour and recognition for the foundation they bequeathed to us - all for real change. As has become evident with the rapid political changes already before us as a country, they did not shed their blood in vain. Their sacrifice is our motivation.

The future of Zimbabwe is assured and the MDC shall remain the rallying point for action until we realise our cherished destiny. We strongly believe that freedom is never an elusive ideal and remains a non-negotiable right for all Zimbabweans. The era of real change has come. Zimbabwe will never be the same again. We honour, we salute, we cherish the courage, conviction, dedication, patience and the selflessness of the people of Zimbabwe who have forged ahead in the face of open hostility from the unpopular Zanu PF.
