MDC reinforces its call for Chihuri to resign
Movement
for Democratic Change (MDC)
September
12, 2012
The MDC reinforces
its call for Augustine Chihuri to resign as the Acting Police Commissioner,
following the indiscriminate assault of ordinary citizens by police
officers in their bid to flush central Harare of Zanu PF's Mbare
based chipangano terror gang who masquerade as rank marshals.
Today many people
were forced to walk for kilometres as police and army officers blocked
public transport operators entering central Harare. The onslaught
left scores of people injured and hospitalised as some businesses
closed fearing violence and looting. School children were not spared
from the attacks.
While we applaud
the cleansing of our bus termini and the protection of ordinary
citizens from Zanu PF's chipangano terror outfit, we condemn the
way Chihuri is handling the issue. He knows the culprits therefore
to act thus is criminal and unprofessional.
Chihuri and the police should have taken heed after the public outcry
to arrest this terrorist outfit, such behaviour should have not
happened. The MDC is therefore concerned of Chihuri's failure to
bring sanity in a professional manner without putting the lives
of innocent citizens at risk.
The people of
Zimbabwe need peace; they need a security force they can trust;
a force that respects them; a force that respects the need to protect
an individual and uphold human rights at all times.
The security
sector in any country should prioritise the protection of its country's
citizens. However, in Zimbabwe we have elements in the security
sector who act as an extension of Zanu PF security department.
It strengthens
the MDC's call for security sector realignment before the
holding of the next free and fair elections.
