Urgent
appeal for Bally Vaughn wildlife sanctuary
Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force (ZCTF)
October 22, 2004
Bally Vaughn
is a beautiful wildlife sanctuary not far from Harare. The animals
in the sanctuary are either orphaned, injured, former pets or problem
animals that cannot be released back into the wild. Animals are
being sent to Bally Vaughn weekly as the economic situation in Zimbabwe
deteriorates and the caretakers of the animals, Sarah Carter and
Kate Kaye-Eddie are having great difficulty feeding and caring for
them.
The animals
are starving as the demand for food has increased, and the source
of food has decreased. In addition to this, the cost of feeding
them has increased in line with inflation. Several animals have
already died, such as a matriarch elephant, sable, and impala to
name a few and Sarah and Kate have had to resort to feeding the
dead animals to the predators.
The animals
all require food, housing and veterinary care. Veterinary costs
are increasing on a monthly basis and basic flea and tick control
is becoming beyond their means. Their major source of food for the
herbivores is no longer operating at full capacity which means they
are receiving less than half the amount of waste vegetables that
they need.
In the past,
they relied on donations of horses and livestock to feed the predators
but this source is shrinking as the economic situation worsens.
Sarah and Kate
are desperate for financial assistance and they have also put together
the following list of essentials that they need for the well being
of the animals:
- Frontline
(Spray or Spot-on for Rolf the Cheetah)
- Dog dip,
flea powder and poultry dusting powder
- Nails, wire
and poles
- Dog kennels
and crates (for shelter during the rains)
- A sponsor
for 3 orphaned piglets (they require 2 litres goat's milk per
day as $4 000 per litre
- A sponsor
for 2 orphaned calves (they require 2 litres cow's milk per day
at $3
500 per litre
- Waste fruit
and vegetables
- Fertilizer
- Lucerne and
maize seed
- Wheelbarrow,
shovels and hoes
- Molasses
and hay
MOST IMPORTANTLY
- YOUR SUPPORT. You can help them by just visiting the sanctuary
on the Shamva Road. They are only a half hour drive from Harare
and are open every day except Mondays.

able to help financially or otherwise, please either contact me
or Sarah Carter or Kate Kay-Eddie.
