Bumi elephant follow up
Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force (ZCTF)
April 09, 2005

See next report

Following my last report on the Bumi elephants, I had a phone call and subsequent email from Barry Deacon of Landela Safaris.

He has assured me that Landela will not be hunting in the Bumi area but in part of the Omay which is controlled by the same council. He further stated that they will, however be in the same area as the elephants mentioned in my report and he will even be operating an anti poaching team to help safeguard the elephants.

I was informed by the residents in the area that no hunting was permitted within a 25km radius of the Bumi Hills Hotel and Mr Deacon felt this statement was inaccurate. He suggested I check it with the authorities which I did. I was told that hunting was not permitted with a 5km radius and not 25km as I stated.

Finally, Mr Deacon stated that they had agreed with the council to utilize a Nyama (meat) quota in a sensible scheduled manner and this would be utilized from the Omay, which is a hunting concession.
